Kapa Haka
In 2011, a group of Teachers from around the cluster came together, with one vision in mind. That vision was to organise a Cultural Festival that our Tamariki of Reporoa could perform at. Alongside Ngati tahu – Ngati Whaoa who are the tangata whenua of Reporoa, this was achieved. In 2011 Reporoa held their first Reporoa Cluster Cultural Festival with 10 groups performing. Now this event is held annually and has grown to around 15 groups participating in the festival.
At Reporoa Primary School every child has the opportunity to participate in Kapa haka. We have two groups that participate in the festival, the junior school with years 1-3 students and the senior school with years 4-6 students. We have kapa haka every week, all year round. During kapa haka, we learn waiata, stories of our community, te mita o te reo (pronunciation), tikanga and titi torea (the short stick). Terms 1 and 2 are the busiest time for our groups because we are practising for the Reporoa Cluster Cultural Festival held in Term 2. We always appreciate our parents and whanau support. If you would like to pop down during practise or on the day to help out you are more than welcome to. Terms 3 and 4 are the times when we can explore more about our local iwi, whenua and learn the other aspects of kapa haka.
