Korero from the Principal:

Last week on Friday we had our Kahui Ako Teacher Only Day. Contrary to popular opinion, we don’t sit around drinking coffee (or other beverages) all day and socialising! 7 of the 8 Kahui schools joined together at Mihi school to focus on learning. It is always a great day when we get together with other teaching and lead staff from Reporoa College, Broadlands, Mihi, Waikite Valley, Lake Rerewhakaaitu and Murupara. The focus of the day was to address the 3 areas of our combined strategic plan of LEARNER AGENCY, WELLBEING, and LEARNER SUPPORT. We took a look at the new Maths and English curriculums, had a session of trauma informed practice, and chose some breakouts including assessment tools,  cultural responsiveness, and PE curriculum.

Yesterday was TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY. The support staff and I transformed the staffroom into a tropical island getaway for the staff complete with a massage corner, yummy food and wellbeing treats. Our teachers work incredibly hard for the benefit of all of our students. They work long hours behind the scenes to make sure all students are getting the education that they need. For this we are thankful! I wonder how you could show your appreciation to your child’s teacher this week? A simple thank you goes a very long way as they often only hear from whanau when there is an issue to solve.

Shake Out:

Last week we were involved in the nation wide shake out. Well done to the students and staff for taking part in this very important exercise to make sure we are ready if an earthquake should occur. The classrooms have also received an emergency kit just in case.

Basketball achievements

Earlier this year Rico Brown and Noah Phillips were selected for the u12 Basketball Pacific Jamboree which they attended over the long weekend.

10 boys and 10 girls were selected to attend from different Basketball associations around New Zealand including Rotorua, New Plymouth, Thames Valley, Tauranga, Auckland and Gisborne. All the kids get Randomly mixed up and put into teams for the duration of the weekend and get to experience different coaching styles, learn new skills and of course play lots of basketball. This was an awesome opportunity for Noah and Rico and they were double excited when they both ended up together in the yellow boys team.

Noah – “I liked learning how to do hook shots and playing basketball but the best thing was making new friends.”.

Rico – “The best part was the mean breakfast, but also I learnt how to spin the ball on my finger and I made new friends and me and Noah would get up early when it was still dark and shoot hoops in the gym before everyone got there”
