Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa – warm greetings to everyone
Welcome to week 10 of term 1. I hope you had a lovely 5 day break with your families spending some quality time together!
Growth Mindset and Resilience
I have been giving a lot of thought to resilience lately. It appears that our children today are somewhat lacking in resilience as they face difficult tasks or events and are not able to cope as well as they should. Resilience is the process of adapting well in the face of adversity. It means “bouncing back” from difficult experiences. How can we as parents and teachers help our children to develop a better ability to deal with the curve balls that life will inevitably throw our way at some point? Telling our children to ‘suck it up’ does not work and is not helpful for their emotional growth or problem solving abilities. Being a ‘helicopter parent’ and fighting every battle for our child has a similar negative outcome in that they develop a learned helplessness. Teaching a growth mindset at home and at school is one way we can help our children grow in resilience. Here are some tips for parents…
Bucket Fillers:
I was delighted to receive a bucket full of affirmations from our Room 1 students this week who were talking about filling each others buckets to positively build each other up. What a cool idea! This principal is feeling ready to take on the end of the term.
Visitors on school grounds:
Please note that anyone (including parents) that visit the school are to sign in at the office. We have a new digital sign in service. Maureen will be more than happy to show you how to use it.
Also, please remember that you MUST sign your child out at the office and give a reason if you are picking them up early.
