Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa – warm greetings to everyone
Is it bullying?
This week in assembly I shared the following poster with the children. We had another go at identifying what bullying was and strategies to use to create boundaries if children were feeling uncomfortable. I reminded the children that telling someone was essential if they felt they were out of their depth in handling a situation with their peers. We can’t help if we don’t know! All staff will listen, as will I, and follow up on anything of concern. Please be mindful that it may take a few days to investigate all sides to the story (as there is always more than one side) and get to the bottom of the facts. I have reminded staff that if it is physical, it must come to me and I will contact parents.
Paid Union Meetings:
Over the last two weeks our teachers have been involved in paid union meetings. We have worked very hard to ensure that the school has been able to remain open in the absence of staff and that your children have been minimally disrupted. The next round of paid union meetings may not be so easy, as the number of meetings on offer will be reduced to one per area. The school will keep you informed well ahead if there is to be disruption to your child’s day.
What are we fighting for?
Teachers and principals have had a consistently raised workload, lack of support for students with additional learning and behavioural needs, and undervaluing of the profession as key issues over the last few years. We have tried to address these issues through previous rounds of negotiations and through work programmes. Although some progress has been achieved, it has been insufficient to address the deep seated and fundamental issues facing our profession. This has led to a crisis in recruitment and retention of teachers and principals.
We thank you for your support in trying to achieve an attractive profession for the future quality of teaching and learning of your tamariki.
Visitors on school grounds:
Please note that anyone (including parents) that visit the school are to sign in at the office. We have a new digital sign in service. Maureen will be more than happy to show you how to use it.
Also, please remember that you MUST sign your child out at the office and give a reason if you are picking them up early.
Stars of the week:
Ka Rawe te mahi (awesome work) to Tyrone Brown who has made exceptional progress in his reading through hard work and determination…and a massive shift in attitude. Ka Pai Tyrone!
