Education in the News
Education in New Zealand has been making headlines lately, and some of these developments directly affect our school community. One of the more prominent stories is the government’s changes to the free school lunches programme. As many of you will have heard, the new model, introduced by Education Minister David Seymour, has faced significant challenges in its rollout. While our school remains under our current contract with Ka Pai Kai for the remainder of this year, we will transition to the new system in 2025, where funding will be reduced from $5 per lunch to $3 per lunch. We are grateful for the continued provision of lunches for our tamariki and hope that any teething issues with the new programme will be resolved well before 2026.
In addition to changes in school lunches, we are also navigating the implementation of two newly revised curricula. Our teaching staff are working incredibly hard to ensure these are introduced effectively and at pace. It is a demanding process, but our kaiako are already noticing positive learning progressions among students. We appreciate their dedication and professionalism as they take on this significant task.
Another major focus for us this year is improving attendance. In term 4, only 47% of our students attended school 90% or more of the time. We are working hard to improve this percentage as it is a concerning statistic. Regular attendance is one of the most critical factors in student success. Please help us by ensuring your child get to school – Every day at school matters. When students miss school, they miss vital learning opportunities, making it harder to keep up and achieve their best. Beyond academics, attending school daily helps students build social connections, develop resilience, and engage in the wider school community. We encourage all whānau to prioritise daily attendance and support their children in making school a regular and positive part of their routine.
Ngā Manaakitanga,
Richelle
