Korero from the Principal:

Yesterday the schools in the Reporoa Kahui Ako had a Teacher Only Day at Lake Rerewhakaaitu School. We met together with Reporoa College, Broadlands, Mihi, Waikite Valley, Rerewhakaaitu, and Galatea. Murupara Area School has also joined our Kahui Ako (Community of Schools) and will attend future learning.

It was amazing to see all of the teachers and support staff learning and collaborating together for better outcomes for all students across Reporoa and the surrounding areas. We did some learning around the curriculum refresh, assessment for learning, trauma informed teaching practice, structured literacy, incredible years teaching, interventions for students who are learning English, ADHD, and the teenage brain. What a full on day of learning.

I would like to acknowledge Nikkole Fell, our DP for helping me organise the day. I would also like to give a big shout out to Bridget and Kate, our teacher aides, for catering. They did an amazing job!

He waka eke noa  – We’re all in this together

How can we stop entitlement in our children?

A few things at school lately have got me thinking about entitlement and how we, as parents and grandparents, avoid the risk of fostering it. As a mum, I certainly got very frustrated with this attitude when it snuck in with my boys (now 20 and 23).

True entitlement arises not from an occasional extra gift but from a consistent pattern where children’s every need is met without them learning to respect limits or solve problems on their own.

Here are some typical ways entitlement can sneak in:

Not enforcing set boundaries: Like bending bedtime rules too often.
Solving simple problems for them: Such as dealing with school issues that they could handle themselves.
Yielding to every whim: Constantly giving in can indeed be problematic.

This parenting guide delves into strategies to keep entitlement at bay while still allowing for those special moments of indulgence.

Kids Greening Taupo:

We loved spending time with Reporoa Primary School tamariki, teaching them about our special native plants and helping them with their Koru Garden . We weeded, infill planted, mulched, and made a bug/lizard hotel with logs. They were excited to find different fungi on the logs, including a pretty cool purple one. It led to discussion about how important fungi are to break down our dead animals and plants.

Star of the week:

Sports:

School and Cluster Cross country

Wow, what a jam packed week of running it has been for our tamariki. Cluster cross country very quickly followed our school cross country. A big mihi to Reece and Jamie for setting up our cross country track and also Matua Wiremu and his senior students from Reporoa College for being marshalls on the course and helping to hand out hot chippie sammies after.

We took 33 kids in total to the cluster cross country event held in Rerewhakaaitu, from our 5 years old through to our year 6 students. All of them represented our kura very well, showing their REPS for the entire day. It was a stunning sun shining day and the whanau support was awesome, it made the day run very smoothly. There were some very challenging competitors that our tamariki came up against, we did manage to come away with a few placegetters, which is fantastic.
