Korero from the Principal:

Please help us by sending your child to school ready to learn

Last week as I was in the senior school teaching, I asked some questions of the students around breakfast, bedtime, tv and gaming. I was shocked to discover that over half of the group had not eaten breakfast and had gone to bed late the night before. Of this group that had stayed up late, they were watching tv or gaming.

It is important to focus on what helps children learn and thrive in school. Two key factors are a nutritious breakfast and enough sleep. Additionally, managing gaming habits is crucial to avoid risks like gaming addiction and exposure to inappropriate content.

The Power of Breakfast

A balanced breakfast is essential for energy and concentration. Children who eat a good breakfast often do better in school, showing improved memory and focus. Skipping breakfast can lead to tiredness and difficulty paying attention.

The Necessity of Good Sleep

Children aged 5 to 12 need 9 to 12 hours of sleep each night. Proper sleep is vital for brain function and overall health. Lack of sleep makes it hard for children to concentrate and solve problems, and it also affects their mood and behaviour.

Gaming Addiction: A Growing Concern

While gaming can be fun, too much of it can be harmful, especially for children under ten. Excessive gaming can interfere with school, physical activity, and sleep, leading to poor school progress.

Risks of Age-Inappropriate Gaming

Playing games meant for older children can expose young kids to violence and mature themes, which can harm their emotional development. Online games with chat functions can also expose children to cyberbullying and inappropriate interactions. Please keep a close eye on what your child is doing online.

Conclusion

To help your child succeed in school, please make sure they have a healthy breakfast, enough sleep, and appropriate gaming habits. If the morning has been a rush and they have missed breakfast, for whatever reason, let us know and we will offer breakfast before class starts. Also please monitor the games your children play to ensure they are suitable for their age. By focusing on these areas, we can all support their learning and well-being.

Up and coming sports events this term: Not a lot of upcoming events. Our main items on the agenda this term is cross country.
