Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa – warm greetings to everyone
Student Voice:
I was delighted to observe Room 1 students interviewing the Room 2 students to gain their views around how they like to learn. They are looking at options and possibilities for our ILE (Innovative Learning Environment). The students will report their findings to the Board of Trustees for consideration in the planning for the future of how our classrooms will work.
Recent years have seen a wealth of statements supporting the idea of young people in school finding and using their voices:
I have been doing some research and learning around student voice myself lately. Professor Jean Rudduck from the university of Canterbury says ‘The fact is that pupils them- selves have a huge potential contribution to make, not as passive objects but as active players in the education system. Students can and should participate, not only in the construction of their own learning environments, but as research partners in examining questions of learning and anything else that happens in and around schools.’
Reports:
The teachers are busy writing your child’s report at present. They will take a look at the assessment evidence that they have collected throughout the year, bookwork, conversations with your child, observations, and the student’s own voice on their progress. From this, teachers will make an OTJ (Overall Teacher Judgement) against the National Standards.
Although the Labour government has made it quite clear that National Standards will be removed, they are working on what this might look like and we have been informed to carry on reporting with National Standards for this reporting cycle.
Because the Room 1 students have only had their current teacher for 4 weeks, their report will be slightly different for this reporting cycle. It will still include all of the requirements from the MOE around reporting to parents.
Wacky Hair Day:
Tayla Bell, a year 4 student in Room 1, attends Mind Plus school for a day each week. As a project for Mind Plus, Tayla has to organise a…
GBP: Giving Back Project
Tayla is raising money for the SPCA for her project. For this she has decided to run a wacky hair day this Friday. Please encourage your child to come to school with wacky hair and bring a gold coin donation. Tayla will also be making and selling her special home made fudge for $1 a bag if you allow your child to indulge in a ‘sometimes treat’.

In the first instance please see the teacher or staff member concerned. This must be done with respect. Our teachers will always behave professionally towards you. Please return this expectation. If you are not happy with this result, come and see me (the principal) by making an appointment. I will meet with you and listen. Again, respect is essential. In all situations I follow up with the interested parties but I will also seek all sides to the story and document it before making a decision. If you are still unhappy, a formal complaint may be made via written letter to the Board of Trustees.
The BOT now have an email address if you prefer to communicate via email. It is [email protected]
